Ivan Filletti joins iGaming Daily podcast to discuss Malta’s gaming trajectory

Episode offers a thorough snapshot of the issues currently in play across the sector, from long-term strategy and new verticals to talent, competitiveness and jurisdictional identity.

What keeps Malta at the centre of the global gaming conversation, and where does the jurisdiction go from here? These are some of the questions tackled by GamingMalta CEO Ivan Filletti during a recent appearance on the popular iGaming Daily podcast with Charlie Horner, in an episode titled Malta: Global Powerhouse of Gaming.

During the podcast, Ivan touched on a range of topics, including the structures, priorities and challenges shaping the next phase of the country’s gaming story. The conversation kicked off with an analysis of  Malta’s long-standing role within iGaming and how that position was built over time. Ivan points to the country’s early regulatory move in 2004, but also makes clear that history alone is not enough. The podcast looks at how Malta has tried to turn that early advantage into something more lasting.

The podcast also placed the spotlight on GamingMalta’s Make it in Malta campaign what sits behind it, with Ivan links its success to real examples, broader national goals, and the question of how Malta presents itself to international businesses looking for a base.

The role of the ecosystem around the industry is a central theme in the episode. Ivan explains how Malta’s approach depends on different entities working together, from government and education to banking and recruitment. The discussion gives a clearer sense of why GamingMalta sees coordination across the board as part of the jurisdiction’s offer.

Talent remains an ever-important part of the conversation, something that Ivan tackles from several angles, including local training, student placements and attracting international workers to Malta. He also speaks about the factors that continue to make the island appealing for people building careers in gaming, while acknowledging that talent remains one of the areas requiring constant attention.

This ties in with the country’s long-term vision as detailed in Malta Vision 2050; during the podcast Ivan outlines how gaming is being framed within the country’s wider long-term direction, and what it means for the sector to be embedded in a national vision.

The podcast also touches upon the broader direction GamingMalta has been exploring in recent years, with areas like video game development, esports, immersive tech and predictive markets giving listeners a sense of how Malta is trying to widen the conversation around gaming.

One of these markets is undoubtedly esports, which features prominently in the episode. Ivan explains how Malta has approached this space, why it was seen as a natural area to develop, and how international activity in esports is feeding into the country’s wider gaming proposition.

The podcast closes with a look at the country not simply as a centre of activity, but as a place where companies, professionals and families can build something more established over time.
