Another successful edition of the Malta Unity Game Jam has wrapped up, with over 40 participants coming together for a hands-on experience designed to strengthen creative, technical, and collaborative skills through game development.
Held between 27 and 29th March 2026 at MCAST Paola, and organised by GamingMalta and Unity, the event brought together students from different educational institutions and backgrounds for a weekend of teamwork, experimentation, and live problem-solving. Working in teams, participants were challenged to develop playable prototypes in an environment that mirrors the pace and pressure of real-world game creation.
By the end of the jam, students delivered 11 playable games, giving every participant the chance to try what the other teams had created and see just how differently each group had responded to the challenge. GamingMalta extends its congratulations to Team Big Whale, who took first place with Couch Calcio. Team Coffee Before Logic followed in second place, and with Team Bilbo placing third.
Honourable mentions also go to Team Bingus INC, who placed fourth, and Team Yellow, who secured fifth place. Each team brought a strong level of focus and commitment, helping raise the standard of the competition throughout.
The event included both local and international students, creating valuable space for learning beyond the classroom. Throughout the weekend, participants had the opportunity to test ideas in real time, build on their technical abilities, and develop the kind of communication, adaptability, and execution skills that are essential within game development and related digital industries.
The event also highlighted the strength of the links being built between education and industry. With mentoring, technical guidance, and direct exposure to professional development processes, the Game Jam offered participants a clearer sense of how their skills can translate into future opportunities within Malta’s growing game development ecosystem. It also feeds into broader progression pathways, including further training, industry engagement, and initiatives such as Basecamp.
The Unity Game Jam forms part of GamingMalta’s wider work through the Unity Centre of Excellence programme, which continues to create more structured opportunities for students to access industry-relevant tools, training, and practical experience. Many of the participants already use Unity as their primary development engine, making the event a natural extension of the work already happening within educational settings.
While thanking GamingMalta, Minister Silvio Schembri stated:
“This initiative plays an important role in Malta’s expansion into video game development as a high‑value digital sector. Initiatives like these, which combine real-life game development training simulations, strengthen the country’s position within the broader interactive entertainment industry, which includes immersive technologies and creative digital content.”
Ivan Filletti, CEO of GamingMalta, highlighted:
“We are pleased to see such a healthy number of local and international students taking up this unique opportunity to gain professional, hands‑on experience in this fast-developing sector. The Unity Malta Game Jam complements academic learning and equips participants with essential skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and technical execution. These are critical competencies for careers in video game development and related digital fields.”
Initiatives like the Unity x GamingMalta Game Jam continue to give life to Malta Vision 2050, proving how education and immersive technologies can come together in a practical and meaningful way. Students are offered the chance to collaborate with each other, apply their skills in real time, and engage directly with the realities of development, making this another important step in strengthening Malta’s future digital and interactive entertainment talent pipeline.
